-Sal and Gabi Break the Universe -Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe Sal is a magician who can reach into other versions of earth, with a love for sarcasm and witty comebacks. Gabi is a straight-A-student, on the student council, and has an aspiration to become a lawyer. On his first day, Sal decides it would be a great idea to put a dead chicken in the school bully’s locker. So, of course, Yasmany makes a big scene of it, and the principal gets involved. Gabby, who wants to be a lawyer, decides to practice on Yasmany, the victim of the dead chicken locker, even though it isn't a court. So, what happens when a class prez, A+ student and a witty magician's two personalities mix? I found the series hilarious and intriguing, I was turning page after page. Sal, with his tendency to make his teachers to go crazy, and his funny personality, And Gabi with her straightforwardness and smartness. This series is great for 9+ and people who like sarcasm, excitement and adventure. This series is also has a bit of Sci-Fi.
-Keeper of the Lost Cities- (first 5 in the series) -Nightfall (book 6) -Flashback (book 7) -Legacy (book 8) Sophie is a normal 12-year-old girl. Kind of normal. She is smart enough to be going to Oxford, and she is in high school, as a senior. Sophie is shy and does not like attention, which is complicated because of her photographic memory and that she goes to high school at 12. She also has other abilities... When Sophie was five, she tripped and hit her head on concrete. When she woke up, she was in a hospital, hooked up to different machines. It turns out she had gotten a concussion along with an allergic reaction. But she didn't feel weird or dizzy, the only thing new were the voices. They were EVERYWHERE. And the worst thing was, she couldn’t turn it off. That’s right! From the age of five, Sophie Foster could read minds!
Keeper of the Lost Cities is a wonderful series! Its full of excitement, mystery, and lots of humor. It’s one of my all-time favorites, and I have re-read the series, 3-4 times. This series is probably great for 10+ kids, though I read it early. I think people who like mischief, or well, they call it ‘science’, (but it's more of magic), and a lot of laughs will love this book.
-The City of the Plague God Sik is a regular guy, who works at his parent's deli. He’s been doing that ever since Mo died. Then, out of nowhere, some rude and demanding characters show up. Not for food, they’re already chomping on rats (🤢), but for something? An artifact that they think Sik has, but he doesn’t. First, they come to the deli, not for food, second, they’re all rotten and stinky, only speak in rhymes, and don’t look quite human. Then they try to start a fight for something Sik doesn’t have. Great, polite customers, am I right? I loved The City of the Plague God, it was hilarious, but at the same time, a few lessons came forth. Sometimes self sacrifice is needed for the greater good, you also have to standup for yourself against more powerful people (gods and bullies 😉) The main character in this book is Muslim, and there are a few Arabic phrases in the book. The book references Gilgamesh and the mythology around him which gave me some insights into Mesopotamian legends. I would recommend this book to kids who are 9+.
